Silvereye's (Zosterops lateralis) also known as Wax eye's or White eyes are a small passerine that is native to New Zealand and Australia and can be found in most settled habitat. They feed on insects, nectar, fruit and berries and are more noticeable in flocks during the winter months. They are easily attracted to feeding stations where sugar water and fruit are available and can be quite aggressive towards each other with displays of wing fluttering and beak clattering. Their origin in New Zealand isn't clear as they were only first observed here in 1832 and could have been swept eastward from Australia by storm or possibily followed a ship across the Tasman Sea. Their Maori name Tauhou (Little Stranger) reflects their recent arrival.
