Mount Tongariro is an active stratovolcano located in the central North Island of New Zealand. It is situated in the Tongariro National Park and is one of three volcanoes that make up the mountain range. Mount Tongariro is the highest of the three volcanoes, standing at a height of 1,978 meters (6,490 feet). The mountain is popular for its challenging hiking trails, including the Tongariro Alpine Crossing, which takes hikers through some of the most stunning scenery in the park. The mountain is also an important spiritual and cultural site for the Maori people. It is a designated dual World Heritage site, recognized for both its natural and cultural significance.
