A Red Crowned Parakeet rests on a branch in the understory of an area of regenerating forest on Tiritiri Matangi Island in Aucklands Hauraki Gulf. .Once widespread on the mainland New Zealands Red Crowned Parakeet or Kakariki was susceptible to predation by introduced mammals, such as cats, rodents, mustelids and possums and is now confined to predator free offshore islands.
